This song was written in early 2000 for the City on a Hill worship album by Steve Hindalong and Mark Byrd. Upon hearing the opening chords and Marc singing “hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth” Steve felt a stirring in his soul that this song had to have a loftier language than what they were typically inclined to use. Wanting the song to be a clear declaration of Who God is and what He means to us, the words seemed to flow quickly onto the paper. They asked Max Powell of Third Day to sing lead on this song which spread quickly throughout the Christian community as an anthem of worship.

We need to wake up to the fact that the Maker of all creation wants to share an intimate relationship with each of his children! When we call out His name, the Savior recognizes our voice. For not only do we know the Shepherd’s voice, but He knows ours as well!
