Youth Truth (Pt 3)
Living & Giving Generously
- Believers are living stones built on the Cornerstone of Jesus Christ into a spiritual temple – 1 Peter 2:4-5
- All believers together are the Temple of God where the Holy Spirit lives – 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
- We are carefully being joined together to build God’s house/temple built on the foundation of the apostles & prophets with Jesus being the Cornerstone that holds it all together – Ephesians 2:19-22
Living and Giving Generously
- If you sow sparingly you reap sparingly
- If you sow generously you reap generously
- Each person should do(give) how they have decided in their heart
- not out of being pressured or feeling obligated
- God loves a cheerful giver
- God is able to make sure you have everything you need
1. Sparing or Generous?
Luke 6:38 (NLT)
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
- So is God’s word saying we should give to others generously so we can get something back generously? – – No.
- Jesus says it is better to give than to receive, so giving to receive a reward should not be our motivation
- God loves being generous and blessing His creation, that is how He’s been eternally
- God pours out blessings for everyone but if you’re holding tightly on to earthly treasures, you can’t hold what God is trying to pour out in your life
- So rewards is not our motivation for giving, it’s just a natural a reality of giving – when we share what we’ve been given we make room for God…
- This is NOT the prosperity gospel
- when we hold what God has given us, our wealth, resources & possessions with open hands instead of clinging to it, we are able to receive what God wants to pour out in our lives
- So, our motivation is not giving to get rewards
- Getting back generously is just a reality of giving because God is so generous
- This is a good segway into our next topic
2. Motivation to Give
7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.
- The word for cheerful in this verse is the Greek word – HILL-AH-ROSS
- It means cheerful or JOYFUL
- Our modern understanding of cheerful may not do this term justice
- When I think of cheerful I think of a calm happy, content
- But Joyous/joyful seems to carry a passion or excitement
- How does this fit with our motivation to give?
- Our motivation is to some how show God love because of the joy we feel because He has loved us
- Our motivation is to give to God and share His love with others because we are so grateful for how God has given to us
- If we have received from God, if we’ve tasted and seen that He is good, if we count our blessings, how can we not be thankful and grateful for all God has given us
- When we’re grateful then we want to respond in some way
- Realizing how much God has given us produces joy and then we give in joyful worship – this should be our motivation
- As God’s children we see Who He is and How He’s given and we do what it talks about in Ephesians 5:1-2
- We can never out give God but we can give back to Him and share what we have been given by Him
- I’ll be honest I haven’t always given the way I should…
- But God has still been faithful to me and my family
- He has always provided for me
- He has never let me down
- That motivates me even more to give
- He’s given to us and loved us so well we want to share that love and those gifts with others so they can experience it too
- We give in cheerful or joyful worship – our motivation is to show God love back and share with others the way He has loved us
Our giving:
- is a reflection of what’s in our heart
- tells how much God has affected our heart
- shows how much we realize we’ve been given
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,And soon all those aroundcan warm up to its glowing; That’s how it is with God’s love,Once you’ve experienced it:You spread His love to everyoneYou want to pass it on.
Give and Take
- God appears to be telling us not to worry in this verse
- Verse 8 seems to be God reassuring us that He is going to provide and make sure we have everything we need
- SO that we can be successful at living and giving generously
- We can give generously and know we are not going to go without what we NEED
- Don’t cling on to the earthly treasures, share and give generously with your resources and time, because I will make sure you are not needy
- Giving is a reflection of our trust in God to provide for us
- Tithe / 10% – enables the local church & it’s leaders to serve & equip the body for the work of ministry
- Offerings above their 10% (tithe) – to help specific ministries & charities who are honest & do the most good
- Share – with those in need, in wise ways
- Giving time to at least ONE ministry in/to the church
- Helping others bear their burdens
- Serving others with our Spiritual Gifts
- Sharing the gospel – so people have their greatest need met
1. THINK about everything God has given you & GIVE THANKS
2. GIVE back to God GENEROUSLY in CHEERFUL WORSHIP
3. SHARE the TIME & RESOURCES God has given you with others

Live Like a Champion – Week 22
The Promise of Partnership
I. Introduction to Partnership with God
Parents must be modeling Christ at home for their kids, otherwise church has little chance of getting through to them.
II. Jody Maddy, FBC Children’s Director
Our MISSION is to partner with parents to build a strong Biblical foundation in every child.
Mark 10:13-16 (NLT)
13 They brought little children to Jesus that He might put His hand on them. The followers spoke sharp words to those who brought them. 14 Jesus saw this and was angry with the followers. He said, “Let the little children come to Me. Do not stop them. The holy nation of God is made up of ones like these. 15 For sure, I tell you, whoever does not receive the holy nation of God as a little child does not go into it.” 16 He took the children in His arms. He put His hands on them and prayed that good would come to them.
III. Kevin King, FBC Youth Director
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, 5 made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!
12 Don’t let anyone despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.
Jody comments on a recent DtL Café that Kevin held with a Sci-fi theme.
God wants to partner with us so that we can share in the joy of partnering with Him!
IV. In Conclusion
30 I searched for a man among them who would repair the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land so that I might not destroy it, but I found no one.
How does God want you to partner with Him to share the Gospel?

Grow: Disciplines needed for healthy spiritual growth (Week 3)
Disciplines Needed for Healthy Spiritual Growth
Good morning…
Who likes eating?
You can all tell I like eating. I like being fed a good meal.
Today I want to talk to you about the discipline of feeding & how incredibly important that is for our growth.
It may make you hungry… but I’m going to need you to focus & I promise to get you out of here no later than 12:30.
You may not have known that eating is a spiritual discipline but if you want to grow closer to Jesus… in every season of life… you can’t get there without being fed.
We’re going to look at Psalm 1 today & learn what we can about this discipline that is needed for healthy spiritual growth.
When you’ve found your place in Psalm chapter 1, please stand out of reverence for God’s word.
Psalm chapter 1
I’d like to read this Psalm again, this time in the NLT
Psalm 1 (NLT)
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. 5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. 6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
This is one of my favorite psalms & one of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible.
In this Psalm we get a great lesson on the spiritual discipline of being fed.
We get a great picture of how we can Grow Closer to Jesus in every season of life.
We get two images of two different types of people in Psalm 1.
The first picture is of a healthy, growing believer.
The second picture is of someone who is not a healthy, growing believer.
Both of these pictures in the Psalm teach us an important lesson, to be a healthy, growing believer you need to be fed, you need to be nourished by God.
As physical beings we need physical food, physical nourishment to grow, stay healthy, stay alive.
But we’re more than physical beings, we are spiritual beings too & we can’t just be fed physically, we need spiritual nourishment.
The scriptures call our relationship with Jesus a walk or a journey, if you don’t get refueled it’s extremely difficult to make the journey.
Verse 1 begins a contrast between the first person & the second.
Psalm 1:1-2 (CSB)
1 How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers! 2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
What we can see from the contrast of these two verses is that both types of people are getting fed.
Everyone is getting fed with something…
The question is… are you getting fed with something that is good for you, that will help you grow?
The person who is NOT a healthy believer is being fed with wicked advice, sinful words & mocking directed at God.
Garbage in garbage out.
If we’re fed with garbage like this, we won’t grow closer to Christ, we won’t be nourished for our journey with Him.
Psalm 1:4-6 (CSB)
4 The wicked are not like this; instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
If you’re not getting fed with the good stuff from God, it leads to a ruined life.
That is why we’re warned in
Colossians 2:8 (CSB)
8 Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.
What are you getting fed with?…
The first person isn’t like the wicked person though, he’s a healthy believer.
The psalmist says the healthy believer is like a healthy tree planted by a flowing stream or river.
Psalm 1:3 (CSB)
He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
The picture of a flourishing tree was a common symbol of a healthy believer.
It pops up in other places of scripture in
Jeremiah 17:8 (CSB)
8 He will be like a tree planted by water: it sends its roots out toward a stream, it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and its foliage remains green. It will not worry in a year of drought or cease producing fruit.
It’s also in
12 The righteous thrive like a palm tree and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon. 13 Planted in the house of the Lord, they thrive in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, healthy and green,
It’s interesting in these two verses that both mention growing fruit in old age or never stopping fruit production.
That is the goal to never stop growing, never stop bearing fruit for Jesus.
So this is what we are supposed to be like as believers, like a flourishing tree.
How do we get like that?
The success of the thriving trees in these passages is all dependent on how close the tree is to it’s source of nourishment
If you look at verses 2 & 3, Psalm 1 tells us how we can be like this tree,
- We have to be planted by flowing streams/delight in God’s word & meditate on it often
- Then we’ll never wither
- Then we’ll produce fruit
Kinds of Spiritual Food
The third is meat:
Hebrews 5:14 (CSB)
The fourth type of food is honey:
Psalm 19:9-10 (NLT)
9 Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. 10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
The Bible is comfort food:
Some of the things that will happen to you if you go without eating for three days:
- You’ll be ravenous then not so much
- Your breath may smell
“Research has shown that breath acetone is reliable indication that you have gone into fat burning mode. You release ketone bodies through your breath—and the smell is often unpleasant” 1
- You’ll lose weight
- Your body starts running on emergency power
“Researchers at Yale found that “During times of starvation, the body preserves two organs and then shrinks the rest,” 2 It runs on emergency power.
Galatians 5:22-23 (CSB)

Love: It’s who I AM (Week 4)
The Modeling Love of Christ
We all need models of Christ’s love around us so we see demonstrations of how we are to love others. As we learn to love like Christ did, we become models to others in our network of friends and family. They in turn become models of Christ’s love to others. Let’s look at examples of this process from God’s Word and then talk about Why, To Whom and How to model Christ’s love…
Ephesians 5:12, 1 Timothy 4:12, 1 Timothy 5:1-2
We see this process in the lives of Paul and Timothy.
Timothy saw this model in his grandmother and mother. (2 Timothy 1:5)
1 Corinthians 1:11, 1 Corinthians 4:16-17
We need to be this kind of interconnected group:
- Fellow believers Modeling His love to us
- We go out and are sharing this love with others
This leads us to ask three questions:
- Why do we model Christ’s love?
- To whom should we model Christ’s love?
- How do we model Christ’s love?
We are the “diorama” of Christ to this community…
Question 2: To whom should we model Christ’s love?
Our neighbor – that is everyone else who is not a believer. (Matthew 22:37-40)
Our enemies! The unworthy… Even those who have deeply hurt us. (Matthew 5:43-48)
We love others by our actions. (1 John 3:18)
Example: Kevin’s story about falling into a mucky pond and the love his grandfather showed to help Kevin get cleaned up.
