Hymn: Gonna Be Alright

Seize the Moment – Day 1243

Today’s new worship song focus will be

Gonna Be Alright

Romans 8:28 (NASB95)

And we know that God causes all things to work together

for good to those who love God,

to those who are called according to His purpose.”

When was the last time you faced a difficulty, a storm or trial in your life? An hour ago? Or a day ago? Or a week ago?  That is where this song comes from for Christian Music artist Ryan Ellis, as he was writing from a season of deep pain in his family. He shared the song with his friends and family, and they all could see how it spoke of God showing up and how He spoke peace into their hearts and lives.

Everything’s gonna be alright, everything’s gonna be alright

You hold me in your arms, until my storm is calm

Everything’s gonna be alright, hmmm, everything’s gonna be alright.

We need to wake up to the realization of this song in our lives. God will be that gentle voice when we are fragile, a calm response when we are confused, giving us the assurance the He is always loving and always near.

Hymn: Jesus Loves the Little Children

Seize the Moment – Day 1236

Today’s hymn focus will be

Jesus Loves the Little Children

Luke 18:16 (NASB95)

“But Jesus called for them, saying, “Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

Herbert Woolston was a pastor, song writer and a sleight of hand magician who claimed to have spoken to over a million children. He pastored several churches, but served 40 years at East Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where he grew the congregation from 176 to more than a thousand*. Though the song has three verses, it is the chorus that most of us know. The message was meant to be simple, direct and memorable…that the love of Jesus is for everyone, no matter the color of their skin.

Jesus loves the little children,
all the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
they are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

We need to wake up and share this message of love with everyone around us, starting with the children! As school has begun, pray for our students, teachers, and administrators of our schools that Jesus’ love could be shared to bring hope, joy and peace into the lives of these precious gifts that God has given us.

Hymn: The Longer I Serve Him

Seize the Moment – Day 1229

Today’s hymn focus will be

The Longer I Serve Him

Deuteronomy 10:12  (NASB95)

“What does the Lord your God require from you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

This hymn was inspired by Bill Gaither’s grandmother, “Mom” Hartwell, as she was nearing the end of her life. She was always singing songs or whispering how good Jesus is. When Bill asked her “has it been worth it, serving Jesus all these years?” She looked up at him with a twinkle in her eyes and said, “Billy, the longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.”

The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows; the more that I love Him,

More love He bestows; Each day is like heaven, my heart overflows.

The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.

We need to wake up and declare as our testimony the words of this song. To share with those around us just how great and wonderful our God is, knowing that through trials and triumphs, through valleys or on mountain tops, He has been with us every step of the way.

Legacy vs. Notoriety

Legacy vs. Notoriety

Hebrews 11 & Psalm 112:1-7

INTRODUCTION:

With all the modern technology that we have today, it is easy to see how a person could become famous overnight. They could easily gain notoriety, but all too often become notorious. They also have a choice to become a legend or leave a legacy.

When you get notoriety, the documentation starts that puts into words the type of person you are. And depending on who is writing the story will depict how much of it is fact or if it is fabrication to make the story more interesting. (Look at all the stories in the tabloids)

The problem with becoming a legend is once again the stories may have been ‘enhanced’ to make them more exciting. The dictionary defines a legend as “a story coming down from the past, especially one popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable.”

Since Pastor Jerry has started this new series based on Hebrews 11, we have seen those in the Bible whom the world would call notorious and legendary. But we know them to be notable for leaving a legacy. A legacy is defined as “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or from the past.” This Faithful Hall of Fame roster shows us men and women who were by no means perfect, but rather chose to live a life of faithfulness to God, leaving a legacy for us to see today.

Let’s do a quick overview of a few from Hebrews 11:

Noah…. building the Ark, following God’s plan
or the time he got drunk and his sons found him naked?

Abraham & Sarah…. leaving home to follow and obey God,
becoming the “father and mother” of a nation,
or the time they lied to a King about their relationship?

Moses…Used by God to be the Deliverer of Israel out of Egypt
or they time he killed an Egyptian and buried him in the sand.

The list could go on and on from other examples in the Bible, but I want to bring this to how it applies to us today. While our names may not appear in the holy scriptures, we are told multiple times that we are to live out our lives to bring glory to God in all we say and do.

Psalm 112:1-2

Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands. Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed.

We are given the strategy for a life of legacy right here in this Psalm. But this is not something that comes naturally to us. We must put God first in every area of our lives.

That can be accomplished by doing the following:

  • Cultivate the soil of our hearts: by delighting in God’s Word and His commands. (Psalm 1:1-3; Psalm 37:4-5)
  • Sow good seeds into the lives of our families and others: with our testimonies. (Psalm 78:4; Psalm 145:4-7)
  • Care for the crop of our future legacy: with proper instruction and setting the example by serving and blessing others. (Deut. 6:5-7; Philippians 4:9; 1 Peter 4:10)
  • Reap a harvest of blessing: for generations to come. (Psalm 78:6-7)

Legacy building begins when we:

1. Cultivate the soil of our hearts: by delighting in God’s Word and His commands. (Psalm 1:1-3; Psalm 37:4-5)

Psalm 1:1-3

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

Meditating on God’s Word day and night.
  • Keep Christian music playing all day.
  • Start and end your day by reading a scripture, maybe even memorizing it.
  • Share with family or someone else how God had encouraged you that day.

Psalm 37:4-5

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.

His desires become our desires when we fully surrender to Him.
  • No longer selfish “what we want”
  • We find new found freedom as we fully trust in the Lord.

2. Sow good seeds into the lives of our families and others: with our testimonies. (Psalm 78:4; Psalm 145:1-7)

Psalm 78:4

We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.

Share what God has done.
  • Consider keeping a journal for both you and others to read.
  • Send out a text, email or notecard to family and friends of what God had been doing in your life.
  • Give a testimony in church of how God has been transforming your story.

Psalm 145:4-7

Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.

It is everyone’s responsibility, not just the leadership
  • Share the story..be a storykeeper.
  • Sing with joy (testimony in song) and praise Him forever!

3. Care for the crop of our future legacy: with proper instruction and setting the example by serving and blessing others. (Deut. 6:5-7; Philippians 4:9; 1 Peter 4:10)

Deuteronomy 6:5-7

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Proper instruction and commitment
  • Words matter, because they reveal what’s in your heart.
  • Along with teaching the truths of God, you need to use and live these words as well:
  1. I Love You (John 15:9)
  2. I Am Sorry (James 5:16)
  3. I Forgive You (Colossians 3:13)

*Forgiveness is more about freeing yourself that it is about freeing others.

Philippians 4:9

Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

1 Peter 4:10

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Don’t just tell, but show how it is to be done
  • This is the example that Jesus gave us
  1. He told the disciples
  2. He showed the disciples
  3. He had them go out in pairs and practice then come back with a report
  4. He sent them out with the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are all to use our gifts to serve others

What is the outcome?

4. Reap a harvest of blessing: for generations to come. (Psalm 78:6-7)

Psalm 78:6-7

So the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.

Conclusion:

My challenge to you is this. We all know that life is short and that eternity is promised to those who believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and have accepted Him as their Savior. But we need to remember that it is not about the carbon footprint that we leave behind, but rather a life lived that impacts the lives of others for eternity. That is what your legacy should be all about. For the next thirty days, Cultivate the soil of our hearts; Sow good seeds into the lives of our families and others; Care for the crop of our future legacy; and in the end, we will all Reap a harvest of blessing: for generations to come.

Hymn: Word of God Speak

Seize the Moment – Day 1222

Today’s hymn focus will be

Word of God Speak

1 Corinthians 2:12-13  (NASB95)

“And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know

the wonderful things God has freely given us. When we tell you these things,

we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak

words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual

truths.”

Written in the summer of 2002, Bart Millard of MercyMe and the band were working at a church camp in Jekyll Island, Georgia while also working on their second album. He was feeling frustrated, feeling like all of the new songs sounded the same. He remembers waking up at 3 am with the first verse and the chorus on his heart and wrote them in a journal and went back to sleep.

It wasn’t until a few weeks later as they were wrapping up the album that they realized they needed one more song. A “nagging feeling” took him back to his journals where he found the song. Like “lightning in a bottle”, God gave him the rest of the song and they recorded that song with just piano and strings.

I’m finding myself at a loss for words

And the funny thing is, it’s okay

We need to wake up to the fact that our quiet time with God needs to be more than just a one-way conversation. We need to be silent and listen to what God is trying to tell us. Let Him get a word in edgewise, for it may be just what you need!

Hymn: In The Garden

Seize the Moment – Day 1215

Today’s hymn focus will be

In The Garden

John 20:14 (NASB95)

“When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.”

One day, in Sunday school, the children were asked if they knew God’s name. One little boy raised his hand to say, “I do! It’s Andy!” The teacher said, “Why do you say that?” to which he replied, “We sang it last week in church…Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me…” Oh, the imagination of a child!

But this hymn came to C. Austin Miles in March of 1912 as he was meditating on his favorite chapter of the Book of John, chapter 20. He said that as he was staring at the wall, his hand on his Bible, his mind took him to the entrance of a beautiful garden, picturing Mary standing there at the tomb of Jesus when Jesus appeared to her. Under the inspiration of this vision, he quickly wrote the words and later that evening, he composed the music.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own

And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

We need to wake up to the realization that Jesus promised to never leave us nor forsake us. This is why we know we can come to that place of peace and quiet to spend some time of communion each day with Him and be renewed in our love and strength.

In the Garden

1
I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

2
He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing. [Refrain]

3
I’d stay in the garden with Him
Tho’ the night around me be falling;
But He bids me go; thro’ the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling. [Refrain]

Hymn: Since Jesus Came into My Heart

Seize the Moment – Day 1208

Today’s hymn focus will be

Since Jesus Came into My Heart

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB95)

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

Rufus H McDaniel began writing hymns in the 1880’s, stating that he felt like God had something for him to do to help brighten the experience of struggling souls. He wanted his hymns to bring blessing and glory to God in the name of his dear Son, whose he was and whom He served. He wrote this song in 1914 after the tragic loss of his son. He sent the song to Charles H Gabriel, who composed the melody that we know today.

Since Jesus came into my heart,

since Jesus came into my heart

Floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll

Since Jesus came into my heart

We need to wake up and remember that no matter what we have faced, or are facing, or will be facing in the near future, we need to sing God’s praises! He brought about change in our lives; He has given us direction; and He will be coming back to take us all home to live with Him for eternity. That should bring you joy!

1
What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I have sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

Refrain:
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart.

2
I have ceased from my wand’ring and going astray,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins which were many are all washed away,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

3
I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,

There’s a light in the valley of death now for me,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond I can see,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

I shall go there to dwell in that city, I know,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And I’m happy, so happy, as onward I go,
Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

Hymn: Sing to the King

Seize the Moment – Day 1201

Today’s hymn focus will be

Sing to the King

Psalm 96:1-2 (NASB95)

Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, all the bless His name;

Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.”

This hymn was originally written in the early 1900’s by Charles Sylvester Horne,  the youngest child of Charles and Harriet. He grew up to become a renowned preacher and author, writing hymns that are still sung today.

This is where Billy Foote comes in. He began leading worship after graduating from East Texas Baptist University in 1990. Sadly, he was stricken with hyper-dysphonia, a condition that affected his vocal cords, around 2000, his wife Cindy took over the lead vocals as he continued to write worship songs. He took this classic hymn and gave it a modern style.

Sing to the King Who is coming to reign,

Glory to Jesus the Lamb that was slain

Life and salvation His empire shall bring,

And joy to the nations when Jesus is King

We need to wake up and lift up our voices every day in worship of the One that gave His everything so that we might have life and have it to the fullest. Billy may have lost his ability to sing, but he gave the church songs that remind us why we are to sing!

This is our song, who to Jesus belong:
Glory to Jesus, to Jesus our King.

2
All men shall dwell in his marvellous light,
Races long severed his love shall unite,
Justice and truth from his sceptre shall spring,
Wrong shall be ended when Jesus is King.

3
All shall be well in his Kingdom of peace,
Freedom shall flourish and wisdom increase,
Foe shall be friend when his triumph we sing,
Sword shall be sickle when Jesus is King.

Hell hath no terrors, and death hath no sting;
Love is victorious when Jesus is King.

Hymn: O Come to the Altar

Seize the Moment – Day 1194

Today’s modern-day hymn focus will be

O Come to the Altar

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NASB95)

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

Released in early 2016 from Elevation Worship, the musical group from Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC, this song is a call to anyone to come to the loving arms of Jesus. They wanted people to know that Jesus came for the broken, the messy, the sinner and they are invited to meet Him at the altar.  The altar is the place where anyone is able to find forgiveness from their sins  and respite from their burdens. This song is a wonderful, powerful reminder of the comfort of the gospel.

O come to the altar The Father’s arms are open wide

Forgiveness was bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ

We need to wake up and rejoice in the fact that because of Jesus and what He did for us, we are a new creation. We need to let others know of this treasure and that it is for anyone who would come to Him and receive this gift.

Hymn: This is Amazing Grace

Seize the Moment – Day 1187
Today’s modern Hymn focus will be:

This is Amazing Grace

 Hymn 151

“We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin

might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we

died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.”

In 2010, Josh Farro reached out to Phil Wickham about getting together to write a worship song. The met up, sang some songs together in worship, then shared their ideas and concepts and that became the bones for the song. In about 20

minutes time, they had come up with the chorus and some verse ideas. But it wasn’t until their friend Jeremy Riddle of Bethel Church heard it and asked If he could rework it that the song became what it is today…a celebration anthem of

all that Jesus has done for us.

This is amazing grace, this is unfailing love

That You would take my place, that You would bear my cross

You laid down Your life that I would be set free

Oh, Jesus I sing for all that You’ve done for me.

We need to wake up and rework our worship, making it into an anthem of praise to Jesus for all that He has, is and is going to do in our lives. When the world hears this message of grace and love, it is sure to be contagious and they  will want to know more.

Hymn: Jesus Paid it All

Seize the Moment – Day 1180

Today’s modern hymn focus will be

Jesus Paid it All

 Hymn 150

Isaiah 1:18 (NASB95)

Come now, let’s settle this,”  says the Lord.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,

I will make them as white as snow.

Though they are red like crimson,

I will make them as white as wool.”

This hymn, written in 1865, came to Elvina M Hall while she was sitting in the choir loft of Monument Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore. The story is told that one Sunday morning, with an extremely long pastoral prayer and a continuous sermon, Elvina’s thoughts began to wander. She wrote down this poem in the blank flyleaf of her hymnal. She later showed them to the pastor,

who, unbeknownst to her, has been met with the church organist John Grape earlier in the week who had given him a musical score that had no words, but  thought he might be able to use in the future. When Reverend Schrick placed two together, they fit like a hand in a glove.

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe,

sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as snow.

We need to wake up and realize that this song reminds us that there is nothing we can do to earn our salvation. Jesus gave His all in order for us to have it all…  Life, Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, and have it to the fullest.

Jesus Paid It All

Verse 1
I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”
Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Verse 2
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Verse 3
For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Verse 4
And now complete in Him
My robe His righteousness,
I’ll rejoice with all my might,
I am now divinely blest.

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Verse 5
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
My lips shall still repeat.

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Hymn: Jesus Messiah

Seize the Moment – Day 1173

Today’s modern hymn focus will be

Jesus Messiah

Hymn 149

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB95)

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

The initial lyrics and melody from this song came from Chris Tomlin’s guitarist, Daniel Carson, that he shared with Chris and his team of Ed Cash & Jesse Reeves. This song uses the name “Messiah”, declaring that Jesus’ Name is the Name above all names – that He is the Christ, the Son of God, the Chosen One, the Savior of the world. They drew their inspiration from the Scriptures that were very specific in describing Who Christ truly is in our lives.

Jesus Messiah, Name above all names. Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven Jesus Messiah, Lord of all

This is a message that everyone needs to hear. With so much in the world that is trying to divide us, we need to wake up to the fact that there is only One who will bring us together…Jesus! He is our Living Hope and the One who bring us life, joy and peace.

Hymn: Spirit of the Living God

Seize the Moment – Day 1166

Today’s modern hymn focus will be

Spirit of the Living God

Hymn 148

John 16:13 (NASB95)

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for

He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak;

and He will disclose to you what is to come..”

There are not a lot of hymns written about the third person of the Trinity. But in 2015, Vertical Worship released a song that their team had written with Meredith Andrews as the lead vocalist. She shared that the first time they sang this song, it was at a staff meeting, and as soon as the first few lines left her lips, everyone could feel the atmosphere of the room change. Recognizing who He is and our need for Him to be active in our lives, say “Yes God, we need you more and more!” This is an invitation that He always accepts.

Spirit of the living God.
Spirit of the living God.
We only want to hear Your voice.
We’re hanging on every word

We need to wake up to the fact that we need God to come and move in us. We need to shift our perspective, opening up our eyes to see what we can’t see, to see Jesus in a ways that we haven’t seen him before, and to reveal to us the Father’s heart.

Hymn: Great Things

Seize the Moment – Day 1159
Today’s modern hymn focus will be

Great Things

 Hymn 147

Psalm 40:5 (NASB95)

“Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and  speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.”

Written in 2018 by modern-day hymn writers Phil Wickham and Jonas Myrin, this song comes from a heart of wanting the congregation of their church to have an upbeat song full of praise and celebration. While reading through the Psalms, Phil was inspired by the words of David and his invitation for people to recognize the great things that God has done for us and to respond with worship.

Come let us worship our King Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things. See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes He has done great things
He has done great things

We need to wake up to the fact that God has been, is, and always will be faithful and to put our full trust in Him. God is bigger than all our problems, fears and situations and He will be there every step of the way with us.

Hymn: The Lord’s Prayer (it’s Yours)

Seize the Moment – Day 1152

Today’s modern hymn focus will be

The Lord’s Prayer (it’s Yours)

Hymn 146

Matthew 6:9 (NASB95)

“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”

This song began through an exchange of voice memos and phone calls between Matt Maher and Bryan Fowler. Both men are known for taking the timeless Scriptures and setting them to music. With a desire to help believers memorize

truth, they set part of Matthew 6 to a melody with a gospel flair.

Father let Your kingdom come, Father let Your will be done

On earth as in heaven, right here in my heart.

This is not the first time the Lord’s Prayer has been put to music. But with this upbeat rhythm, there seems to come a renewed call to come back to the basics.

We need to wake up and not overcomplicate things in our lives, but simply remember that we are shown by Jesus how to pray each day. It is not with flowery words that we get God’s attention, but rather we are to have a daily conversation with Him, recognizing who He is and that He will provide all of our needs in every area of our lives.

Hymn: The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power

Seize the Moment – Day 1145

Today’s hymn focus will be

The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power

 Hymn 145

 1 John 1:7 (NASB95)

but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Written in 1962, this hymn was almost thrown away. Twins Andre & Sandra Crouch were born to Benjamin and Catherine Crouch in 1942. Raised in the church his father was the pastoring, he was at a cookout at the home of James Cleveland, a renowned gospel musician.

Andre’ remembers wishing he could write a gospel song and while watching the adults pour bbq sauce over the

meat, he began writing down and sing “The blood that Jesus shed for me, way back on Calvary…” But he thought it wasn’t good, so he wadded up the paper and threw it away. But his sister Sandra pulled it back out and told him it was good and he should finish it.

For it reaches to the highest mountain,
and it flows to the lowest valley

The blood that gives me strength from day to day
It will never lose its power.

We need to wake up and recognize the power of the blood of Jesus shed for you and me. Not only does it save us from our sins, but also provides power in our prayer life as we pray for healing and protection.

Hymn: All Creatures of Our God and King

Seize the Moment – Day 1138

Today’s hymn focus will be

All Creatures of Our God and King

Luke 19:40 (NASB95)

Hymn:  144

But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”

This hymn is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi written just before his death in 1225 AD, exhorting all creation to worship God. Born in Italy to a rich merchant in 1182 AD, he came to Christ in his early 20’s after being released from the prisoner of war camp. Renouncing his inheritance, he began traveling the countryside, preaching the gospel to everyone he met, seeking to make Christ real, while living simply and loving nature.

It wasn’t until 1919 that an English version appeared when Rev. William H Draper used it for a children’s worship festival in Leeds, England.

All creature of our God and King,

Lift up your voice and with us sing

Alleluia, Alleluia

This was not a new concept! He was reflecting upon the words of the psalmist in Psalm 148! We need to wake up and do exactly what this psalm challenges us to do…Praise Him each day! All of creation is doing it, and everything that has breath is supposed to. So why aren’t you joining in the heavenly chorus to worship the One Who created us all?

Hymn: Christ Our Hope in Life and Death

Seize the Moment – Day 1131

Today’s modern hymn focus will be

Christ Our Hope in Life and Death

 1 Corinthians 15:20  (NASB95)

Hymn 143

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.”

This modern-day hymn was written in 2020 by a group of songwriters from the Getty Music group. In a time where things in life appeared to be dark and grim, they wanted to create a song that reminds us of the hope of the resurrection. Our hope comes from putting our trust in the One who took on death, then crushed its power by His resurrection. We as Christians can sing hallelujah because we have the hope and promise of a glorious future.

What is our hope in life and death? Christ alone, Christ alone.

What is our only confidence? That our souls to Him belong

We need to wake up and ask ourselves this question: What is our only comfort in life and death? It is our blessed hope and faith in Jesus! That is the only statement that can transform how we live each day.

Christ Our Hope in Life and Death

What is our hope in life and death?
Christ alone, Christ alone.
What is our only confidence?
That our souls to him belong.
Who holds our days within his hand?
What comes, apart from his command?
And what will keep us to the end?
The love of Christ, in which we stand.

(Chorus)
O sing hallelujah!
Our hope springs eternal;
O sing hallelujah!
Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death.

What truth can calm the troubled soul?
God is good, God is good.
Where is his grace and goodness known?
In our great Redeemer’s blood.
Who holds our faith when fears arise?
Who stands above the stormy trial?
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh
Unto the shore, the rock of Christ?

Unto the grave, what shall we sing?
“Christ, he lives; Christ, he lives!”
And what reward will heaven bring?
Everlasting life with him.
There we will rise to meet the Lord,
Then sin and death will be destroyed,
And we will feast in endless joy,
When Christ is ours forevermore.

Hymn: How Firm a Foundation

Seize the Moment – Day 1124

Today’s hymn focus will be

How Firm a Foundation

Hymn 142

Hebrews 13:6(NASB95)

“so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”

In 1787 Dr. John Rippon and his Minister of Music, Robert Keene, developed a church hymnal for Carter’s Lane Baptist Church in Bristol, England. While the author of the hymn only bears the letter “K”, many hymnologists and scholars attribute the song to Keene.

The power of this hymn is because the verses are based on biblical promises, starting with the first stanza of the sufficiency of God’s Word for our faith. It goes on to personalize more promises from His Word for each and every one of us.

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord.

Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

We need to wake up each and every day by standing on the promises that God has given us. And you can only know what those promises are when you make it a habit of reading His Word to start your day. What is the best vitamin for a healthy Christian life? B -1!

Fear not, I am with thee; oh be not dismayed
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand

When through the deep waters I call thee to go
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress

When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie
My grace all sufficient shall be thy supply
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine

The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose
I will not, I will not desert to its foes
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake

Hymn: Christ Arose

Seize the Moment – Day 1117

Today’s hymn focus will be

Christ Arose

Hymn 141

Matthew 27:64(NASB95)

“Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day,  otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”

The Chief priests and the Pharisees were playing the political game by going to Pilate to have him post guards and seal the tomb to prevent anyone from coming to take His body in order to fake His resurrection. There was distrust.

Imagine being there with the disciples, friends, and family of Jesus as they are in the second day of mourning His death. It was the sabbath day, so they could not do anything to care for His body because of Jewish laws and customs. All they could do was wait. There was despair.

However, the hymnist Robert Lowry describes a different point of view where there is hope. He painted a picture that would thrill an audience with his vivid descriptions, inspiring people with the thoughts that inspired him.

Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior! Waiting the coming day,

            Jesus my Lord!

Vainly they watched His bed, Jesus my Savior! Vainly they sealed the dead,

            Jesus my Lord!

It may be Saturday, but Sunday is coming! And it’s not just any Sunday, but it is Easter Sunday! We need to wake up proclaiming that He is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Make plans to join us at 7:00 am for Sunrise Service, then our Easter Pitch-in breakfast at 7:45 am, Sunday School at 9:00 am, then wrapping up with Easter Worship at 10:30 am! It’s going to be a great day!

Christ Arose

1
Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior,
waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!

Refrain:
Up from the grave he arose;
with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain,
and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

2
Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior,
vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord! [Refrain]

3
Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior;
he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord! [Refrain]

Hymn: Hosanna!

Seize the Moment – Day 1110

Today’s modern-day hymn focus will be

Hosanna!

Hymn 140

Matthew 21:9(NASB95)

“The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!”

As we look forward to Palm Sunday tomorrow, we need to prepare our hearts in worship. This hymn was written in 2006 by Brooke Fraser Ligertwood, painting a picture with words of how she saw people worshiping Jesus.  Each verse starts as a proclamation of “I see…”, depicting what could be if people allowed God to work in their lives. Just as important, it goes on to demonstrate a heartfelt desire for revival, having the singers cry out for us to be shown how to love and to do everything for the kingdom of God.

Heal my heart and make it clean, open up my eyes to the things unseen

Show me how to love like you have loved me.

We need to wake up and make each day a day of declaring loud and clear…“Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest!” As you have heard Pastor Jerry state, this is the day that the Lord has made, and we are to rejoice and be glad in it. There should be no doubt as to Who’s child you are!

Hosanna!

I see the King of glory
Coming on the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes
The whole earth shakes

I see His love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing
The people sing

Hosanna Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
Hosanna Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest

I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith

I see a near revival
Stirring as we pray and seek
We’re on our knees
We’re on our knees

Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me
Break my heart for what breaks Yours
Everything I am
For Your kingdom’s cause
As I walk from earth into eternity

Hymn: Lead Me To Calvary

Seize the Moment – Day 1103

Today’s hymn focus will be

Lead Me To Calvary

Hymn 139

1 Corinthians 2:2   (NASB95)

“For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”

Many of the gospel songs of the nineteenth century were focused upon the cross and specifically Calvary, which remained central to the evangelicals even into the mid-twentieth century. Today’s hymn was written by New England Quaker Jennie Evelyn Hussey and was published in 1921. She created a compelling and memorable refrain with direct and evocative language and had a singable and easily learned melody to help solidify the theme in the singer’s mind and heart.

Lest I forget Gethsemane; Lest I forget Thine agony.

Lest I forget Thy love for me, lead me to Calvary

Jennie lived a selfless life, caring for an invalid sister, never complaining while serving her with love as Christ would have done.

We need to wake up and look at our life situations through the eyes of Jesus rather than through our worldly vision. When we do, we will see things differently and show the world what it means to love God and love others.

Lead Me to Calvary

Verse 1
King of my life I crown thee now —
Thine shall the glory be;
Lest I forget thy thorn-crowned brow,
Lead me to Calvary.

Chorus
Lest I forget Gethsemane,
Lest I forget thine agony,
Lest I forget thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.

Verse 2
Show me the tomb where thou wast laid,
Tenderly mourned and wept;
Angels in robes of light arrayed
Guarded thee whilst thou slept.

Chorus
Lest I forget Gethsemane,
Lest I forget thine agony,
Lest I forget thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.

Verse 3
Let me like Mary, thru the gloom,
Come with a gift to thee;
Show to me now the empty tomb —
Lead me to Calvary.

Chorus
Lest I forget Gethsemane,
Lest I forget thine agony,
Lest I forget thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.

Verse 4
May I be willing, Lord, to bear
Daily my cross for thee;
Even thy cup of grief to share —
Thou hast borne all for me.

Chorus
Lest I forget Gethsemane,
Lest I forget thine agony,
Lest I forget thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary.

Hymn: Blessed Be The Name

Seize the Moment – Day 1096

Today’s song focus will be

Blessed Be The Name

Hymn 138

 Psalm 72:18-19 (NASB95)

Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders. And blessed be His glorious name forever; And may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen.”

Taking a song and using part of its lyrics to create a new song is nothing new. In fact there is a current song that takes the titles of several hymns and create a new song of worship (Check out “This is My Song” by North Point Worship). In 1888, Ralph Hudson took Charles Wesley’s hymn “O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing” that was written in 1739 and gave it a new spin by adding in the phrase “blessed be the name of the Lord” into the verses and creating a new chorus.  William Kirkpatrick wrote the new accompaniment for this hymn that has been in the Baptist hymnbook ever since.

Blessed be the name, blessed be the name, blessed be the name of the Lord!

Blessed be the name, blessed be the name, blessed be the name of the Lord!

We need to wake up to the fact that it is not the style of the song, but the content of the words that lead us to proclaim God’s glory and majesty. So whether you are a little bit country, or a little bit rock and roll, or somewhere in between, we are all called to worship God!

1 All praise to Him who reigns above
In majesty supreme,
Who gave His Son for man to die,
That He might man redeem!

Refrain:
Blessed be the name, blessed be the name,
Blessed be the name of the Lord;
Blessed be the name, blessed be the name,
Blessed be the name of the Lord.

2 His name above all names shall stand,
Exalted more and more,
At God the Father’s own right hand,
Where angel hosts adore. [Refrain]

3 His name shall be the Counsellor,
The mighty Prince of Peace,
Of all earth’s kingdoms Conqueror,
Whose reign shall never cease. [Refrain]

Hymn: Knowing You, Jesus

Seize the Moment – Day 1089

Today’s song focus will be

Knowing You, Jesus

Hymn 137

 Philippians 3:8 (NASB95)

More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,”

Released on May 16, 2010, this modern-day hymn was written by Graham Kendrick. He had begun reading the book of Philippians after being asked to write a specific song to go along with the Bible readings and teachings for an upcoming conference. As he mediated and asked God to reveal anything that might be a seed for a song, his attention was drawn to today’s scripture. After listing all his accomplishments, Paul dramatically pushes them aside for the sake of one supreme goal – to know Christ Jesus.

Knowing you, Jesus.   Knowing you, there is no greater thing
You’re my all, you’re the best You’re my joy, my righteousness
And I love you, Lord

We need to wake up and desire to have the same drive as the Apostle Paul. It is not about us and what we have done, but what Christ has done and continues to do in and through us. May God receive all the glory, honor and praise for what we do and say each and every day!

Knowing You, Jesus

All I once held dear, built my life upon
All this world reveres and wars to own;
All I once thought gain I have counted loss,
Spent and worthless now compared to this.

Chorus
Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You
There is no greater thing
You’re my all, You’re the best
You’re my joy, my righteousness,
And I love You Lord.

Verse 2
Now my heart’s desire is to know You more,
To be found in You and known as Yours,
To possess by faith what I could not earn
All surpassing gift of righteousness

Chorus
Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You
There is no greater thing
You’re my all, You’re the best
You’re my joy, my righteousness,
And I love You Lord.

Verse 3
Oh to know the power of Your risen life,
And to know You in Your sufferings;
To become like You in Your death, my Lord,
So with You to live and never die.

Chorus
Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You
There is no greater thing
You’re my all, You’re the best
You’re my joy, my righteousness,
And I love You Lord.

Hymn: There is a Redeemer

Seize the Moment – Day 1082
Today’s song focus will be

There is a Redeemer

Hymn: 136

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from
God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,”

Written in 1977 by Melody Green , this simple, straight forward confession of faith quickly develops into a broad Trinitarian doxology song. Melody grew up the daughter of a faithful Russian Orthodox Jewish mother and a non-practicing Methodist father. This caused her to have a strong desire to search for true spiritual meaning in her life. After college, she met Keith Green who was an aspiring musician and married a year later. It was after they both attended a bible study that they gave their lives to Jesus and their lives were forever changed. Even after the tragic death of her husband in 1982, she still carries on Last Days Ministries to this day.

Thank You, oh, my Father, for giving us Your Son,
and leaving Your Spirit ‘til the work on earth is done.

As we continue through this season of Lent, we need to wake up and remember that God made the first sacrifice of the animal to give Adam and Eve their clothes. Later, He gave us the ultimate sacrifice of His Son for our sins, raised Him back up from death to life, and has given us the Holy Spirit to continue sharing this message of love and grace to others until He calls us home.
