Hymn: Strong God

Seize the Moment – Day 1397
Today’s hymn focus will be

Strong God

Psalm 46:1 (NASB95)

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.”

Released in 2015 by New Life Worship and written by Meredith Andrews, Jason Ingram and Jon Egan, this song celebrates God’s unshakeable strength and power, and His unwavering faithfulness to His people. Through this song, we are encouraged to put our complete trust in Him, creating an atmosphere of fresh surrender. It shifts the focus from our own human limitations to God’s unlimited power. Whether it is sung in personal worship or with fellow believers, we are encouraged to make this song a heartfelt prayer while expressing our praise and adoration to the Almighty God.

Sing out lift your voice and cry out
Awesome is our strong God mighty is our God.

We need to wake up and allow this song to captivate our hearts, letting it become a powerful anthem as we seek spiritual strength and encouragement from God. By doing so, we are able to overcome any obstacle or challenge we may face.

Hymn: I Lift My Hands

Seize the Moment – Day 1390

Today’s hymn focus will be

I Lift My Hands

Psalms 63:3-4  (NASB95)

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,

My lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live;

I will lift up my hands in Your name.”

The song was written by Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Matt Maher, and Jesse Reeves in 2010. Rooted in biblical truths of surrender, trust and worship, this song has impacted many believers’ lives since its release. It has served as a source of comfort, inspiration, and encouragement by reminding everyone of the faithfulness of God and the power of worship in our individual lives.

I lift my hands to believe again You are my refuge, you are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember You are faithful, God, forever

We need to wake up every day with a firm resolve in our hearts that this and every day is a day that the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it, no matter what we are facing! Why? Because we are not facing it alone. He is there with us. And when we lift up our hands, our Father God is faithful to pick us up and carry us through.

Hymn: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

Seize the Moment – Day 1383

Today’s song focus will be

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

Luke 2:14-15 (NASB95)

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He

is pleased.”   When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds

began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see

this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”

Written by Edmund Sears in 1849, it is one of the only Christmas hymns that does not mention the birth of Jesus or the holy family, but rather upon the message of the angels. He penned the lyrics during a time of personal struggle with all the darkness in the world. The message of peace as proclaimed by the angels was one he was trying to make relevant for the current times in which he lived. Sung to a tune called “Noel”, it was adapted by Arthur Sullivan from an English melody in 1874.

“It came upon a midnight clear, That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold:”

We need to wake up and take the message of peace into our area of the world that needs to either hear it for the first time or be reminded of it. Remember, each of us are to be the messengers of the gospel, just like those shepherds who heard it from the angels on that night so long ago.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

1
It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven’s all-gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.

2
Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o’er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o’er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.

3
And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow,
look now! for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
and hear the angels sing!

4
For lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing.

Hymn: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Seize the Moment – Day 1376

Today’s song focus will be

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Isaiah 7:14 (NASB95)

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:

Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son,

and she will call His name Immanuel.”

Penned in 1744 by Charles Wesley, this hymn came about as he was inspired to write hymns that would prepare people’s hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. He wanted it to express the deep needs of humanity while also helping to renew faith in Christ’s coming. That is what makes this such a wonderful song to be part of the Advent Season celebration.

Come, thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in thee.

We need to wake up and continue to anticipate the coming of Christ. May it stir up an urgency to share your testimony of what God has done for you and how simple it is for others to have this precious gift of love, hope and joy. For only Jesus can

truly set you free!

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

Hymn: Joy to the World

Seize the Moment – Day 1369

Today’s song focus will be

Joy to the World

Isaiah 9:6 (NASB95)

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;

And the government will rest on His shoulders;

And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor,

Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaac Watts was one of the greatest hymn writers in church history. He originally wrote this hymn as a poem based on Psalm 98:4-9, adapting and interpreting the words to celebrate Jesus’ role as both king of His church and the whole world. The melody to which it is sung today was set to fragments composed by Watts & George Handel in England and pieced together by Lowell Mason & William Billings in America. And it is easy to remember how it starts because it is a simple scale played in descending order.

Joy to the world, the Lord has come! Let earth receive her King.

Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing

And heaven and nature sing! And heaven, and heaven and nature sing!

We need to wake up and share this good news of great joy! With all that is happening around us today, the world needs more joy! So share that gift with everyone you meet this holiday season…and beyond!

Hymn: Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Seize the Moment – Day 1362

Today’s song focus will be

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

 Luke 2:13-14 (NASB95).

And suddenly there appeared with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly host

praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest,

And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

Originally written by Charles Wesley around 1658 AD, after a time where the singing of Christmas carols was abolished by the Puritan Parliament in 1649 AD, we find the proponent of this cause had passed away, and the Monarchy regained power and restored the celebration of Christmas. The song as we know it was re-written slightly in 1753 by famous English preacher George Whitefield, who only changed the opening part of the song. And in 1856, Dr. Wm Cummings joined the lyrics of the carol with the music by Mendlessohn, a Messianic Jew,  to give us the current song we sing today.

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King”

Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.

We need to wake up and join with the angels in proclaiming the first message of good news or the Gospel to those around us that are still in need of its powerful message. If you give no other gift this Christmas season, give the message of God’s love for all who will receive it.

Hymn: O Little Town of Bethlehem

Seize the Moment – Day 1355
Today’s song focus will be

O Little Town of Bethlehem

 Matthew 2:6 (NASB95)

“‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,

Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;

For out of you shall come forth a Ruler

Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

Written in 1868 by Phillips Brooks, it was originally created as a Christmas hymn for the Sunday School Children at Holy Trinity Church, after he had taken a pilgrimage on horseback from Jerusalem to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. Louise H. Redner wrote the music for this song, a simple melody inspired by God late in the night just before the Christmas Eve service.

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie;
above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.

We need to wake up and see that this song not only beautifully describes the little town asleep in that December night, but according to British Hymnologist J.R. Watson, “gracefully modulates from a description of Christmas into an examination of the meaning of Christmas; first in its encouragement of charity and faith, and then into the coming of Christ into the human heart.”

Table of Blessings 2023

We gathered together on Sunday, November 26, 2023 to thank God for His many blessings.  Seven of our brothers and sisters shared some very specific events in their lives for which they were exceedingly grateful.  Watch as they share how God has seen them through times of hardship and sorrow, triumph and rejoicing.  God is unpredictable as to how He does it, but indeed He works all things for the good of those who love Him and whom He calls to His purpose! (Romans 8:28).

Below is a general outline and description of those who shared with us.  The time references are from the first video with just the sharing…

Host: Pastor Ken Durham

Matt and Emily Hurst (2:08)

Sometimes God brings into our lives things that are difficult to bare.  Change can be challenging, but God is good – and He means ALL FOR GOOD!  Our daughter has cystic fibrosis, we have gone through job changes, substance abuse in the family, and the death of a parent.  We are learning to forgive as we walk with Him.  Matt shared a meaningful quote from a book that he recently read:

They say of some temporal suffering,
“No future bliss can make up for it,”
not knowing that Heaven, once attained,
will work backwards and turn even that agony
into a glory.
– a quote from The Great Divorce (C.S. Lewis)

Deb Winters (15:36)

Deb shared about transitions in life such as retirement.  (Ecclesiastes 3:1)  We must remember God’s faithfulness.  He is with us through it all!  Prayer is so important in life.  When I truly trust God, He brings peace.  I often wondered how I could ever cope with retirement when I am a people-person.  Actually, transitions are nothing new – we experience them throughout life.  (Proverbs 3:5-6) We learn to trust as we keep turning to Him.  I find in retirement that there is more freedom with more time for relationships and for prayer!  I highly recommend retirement!

Tina Durham (26:08)

I, too, have gone through a big job change.  I have learned that God is in control.  It may take time, but He knows what we need.

Misty Watkins (27:57)

Losing a spouse is very difficult.  It takes time to learn how to live without them.  There are many changes that happen along the way, like changing jobs.  I have learned that God wants to be in the job with us.  Trust Him and share Him with others.  Pray!

John and Soozi Davisson (35:15)

(John 2:1-11, Psalm 76)  We are servants.  God chose us.  We want to be available. (2 Corinthians 6:1)  Yes, we too have experienced job change.  We have been considering adoption.  We have also been considering Samaritan’s Purse.  As we read in the book of John, we  learned that the servant’s job was to say, “Yes.”  They were to bring the water.  Jesus is the one who transforms our efforts. (2 Samuel 22:30)  When we are available and say, “Yes” – He provides what is needed!  “With my God, I can!”  We must remember that this is God’s story, not ours.  Consider the power of God’s word in our community.  (Psalm 23:3; Isaiah 55:10-11; Hebrews 10:20-25).  Lastly we would like to share a “pour-over” of God’s word with you… (Psalm 103).

Ken closes with song and prayer  (50:56)

Take the time to be thankful.  For your home, your family and for what God is doing in your life.

Hymn: Give Thanks to God

Seize the Moment – Day 1348

Today’s song focus will be

Give Thanks to God

Psalm 136:1 (NASB95)

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,

For His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

Co-written with his good friend Allan McKinlay, Peter Crockett wanted to write a song that would reflect the liturgical writing of Psalm 136 that could be spontaneously sung, or spoken or prayed. It was his plan to bring the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers into the congregational time of worship in song.

He sent his Son to die and rise again to save us
His never ending love is steadfast and sure
He’s broken our chains and given us freedom
Give thanks to God, for he is good.

We need to wake up and remember that each of us are to enter His gates with thanksgiving in our hearts by thanking Him for specific situations and things He has done in our lives.

In Him we are alive and have joy everlasting. His never ending love is steadfast and sure
He casts out all fear and fills us with courage. Give thanks to God for He is good

When storms come and rage His peace overwhelms us. His never ending love is steadfast and sure
The Lord is our refuge when trouble surrounds us. Give thanks to God for He is good
Give thanks to God for He is good

He’s always pouring out His abundant provision. His never ending love is steadfast and sure
For the depths of His riches and incredible wisdom. Give thanks to God for He is good
Give thanks to God for He is good

Always good. Always good to me
Always good. Always good to me

You’re always good. Always good to me
Always good. You’re always good to me

We believe You’re always good. Always good to me
Always good. You’re always good to me

Hymn: Grace into Gardens

Seize the Moment – Day 1341

Today’s song focus will be

Grace into Gardens

Psalm 30:11-12 (NASB95)

“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.”

The title track to Elevation Worship’s eighth album, this song was written by Chris Brown, Tiffany Hammer, Brandon Lake and Pastor Steven Furtick in 2019. Inspired by a sermon from Steve about the ongoing influence of the prophet Elisha, even after his death. Chris stated: “…God is still in the business of bringing dead things back to life. If we’ll trust God even with the seemingly dead areas of our lives, if we’ll believe in the power of God, …nothing is wasted. Nothing is over. God can turn any situation around.”

Oh there’s nothing better than You,
There’s nothing better than You
Lord, there’s nothing
Nothing is better than You.

We need to wake up and proclaim our faith in praise into the face of fear and doubt that there is nothing better than the Lord our God. He brings love, life, hope, grace and peace to each and every situation in our lives.

Hymn: Christ is Enough!

Seize the Moment – Day 1334

Today’s song focus will be

Christ is Enough!

Colossians 2:9-10 (NASB95)

For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,  and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority.”

Written in 2003 by Hillsong Worship, this song is a wonderful reminder that Jesus is our reward, our devotion, our joy, our salvation and our hope. He is all we need. By making the decision to follow Him, we choose to turn away from the things of this world and follow after Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He is more than enough for us! Verse two states:

Christ my all in all, my joy and my salvation

And His hope will never fail,  Heaven is our home

We need to wake up and realize the sufficiency of our Lord and Savior! He is our all in all, and is everything we will ever need.

Hymn: Jesus Saves!

Seize the Moment – Day 1327

Today’s hymn focus will be

Jesus Saves!

John 14:6 (NASB95)

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Priscilla J Owens was a school teacher in Baltimore, MD who loved to write songs for children’s services at Union Square Methodist Church. When asked to write a song for an upcoming missionary service, the words of 1 Timothy 1:15 inspired her. It states:

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

It originally sung to the chorus from an opera, but William J Kirkpatrick composed a vibrant melody for the words of her poem to become the song that we sing today.

            We have heard the joyful sound – Jesus Saves! Jesus Saves!

            Spread the tidings all around – Jesus Saves! Jesus Saves!

We need to wake up and proclaim the message of this song each and every day of our lives, until He calls us home. Don’t keep it a secret, but let it be known that Jesus Saves!

Jesus Saves!

1
We have heard the joyful sound:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
Climb the steeps and cross the waves;
Onward!—’tis our Lord’s command;
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
2
Waft it on the rolling tide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Tell to sinners far and wide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing, ye islands of the sea,
Echo back, ye ocean caves;
Earth shall keep her jubilee,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.
3
Sing above the battle’s strife,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
By His death and endless life,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing it softly thru the gloom,
When the heart for mercy craves,
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.
4
Give the winds a mighty voice,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Let the nations now rejoice.
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Shout salvation full and free,
Highest hills and deepest caves,
This our song of victory,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

Proclamation, Preparation & Positioning

Proclamation, Preparation & Positioning

Deuteronomy 32:2-4; Ephesians 5:15-19; Philippians 4:5-9

Today is going to be a different type of Sunday. We are starting the service with each point of the message being reinforced with our worship in song. For those taking notes, the three key points are 1) Proclamation; 2) Preparation; and 3) Positioning. These three “P’s” will help us in both our prayers and our praise.

I. PROCLAMATION: Moses told the people of Israel

Deuteronomy 32:2-4:

“Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew. Let my words fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord; how glorious is our God! He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!”

When we proclaim something, we are making it known to those around us. When we pray, we are to proclaim who God is to us. When we sing our praises, we are to lift our voices and proclaim the goodness and the greatness of our God. In Psalm 71:19-19, the psalmist David writes:

O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do. Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me. Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the highest heavens. You have done such wonderful things. Who can compare with you, O God?

He also writes in Psalm 105:1-2:

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.”

And then in Psalm 145:4-7, we are told to:

Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.”

Finally, we are encouraged by John, the beloved disciple in 1 John 1:1-2:

“We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.”

So, as we prepare to lift our voices in worship, remember we are all to proclaim praise to the One Who was, Who is, and Who always will be.

Worship in Song 1: Living Hope, Goodness of God, Trust in God

II. Preparation: Preparation is important for both heart and mind.

QUOTE: “Proper preparation prevents poor performance.”

A. Preparing the heart.

1. Confession is where it starts.

1 John 1:9:

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

2. We have to clean house of the things that affect our heart.

Ephesians 5:15-19: So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.”

*Previous verses warned us not to live like we used to, because we are to live our lives to please God.

B. Preparing the mind: A Call for holy living: 1 Peter 1:13

“So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.”

Currently, mental health has become a hot topic. We need to realize that the battle of the mind is something that has been a part of human struggle for a long time, especially when it comes to spiritual matters. Moses, King David, the prophet Elijah and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi are just a few examples of those who battled some form of mental illness and the Bible records their struggles. As we face issues like work-related stress, seasonal depression or even chemical imbalance, there may be some that requires that require medical assistance. This is not a bad thing! That is why we have the medical professionals to help in these times.

However, we are also told in scriptures to bring everything to Jesus. 1 Peter 5:7 states:

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

AND…we are to care for one another. Paul wrote to the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 12:25:

“This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.”

This is not an either/or thing, but rather a both/and. We as the church are to be here to help one another as we see Christ transforming people’s lives and their stories. BUT, it is also important that each person take responsibility to turn EVERYTHING over to God by preparing our hearts and our minds.

Worship in Song 2: Lavish, Who You Say I Am

III. Positioning: Surrendering our wants and desires

A. What Christ did for you and me: Philippians 2:6-8:

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

B.What we are to do for Him: 1 Peter 5:6-10

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.”

“Christ demands first place. There’s no room on the throne of your heart for two gods.”

– Billy Graham

This is something that you must do for yourself, because I cannot. HOWEVER, I can hold you accountable, which is what I am doing today!

Philippians 4:5-7:

“Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

I want to close out the service with a response time. Coming to the altar is not a sign that you have done something, but rather you making a public demonstration of presenting yourself as a living sacrifice, making sure that your sacrifice is still on the altar! Position yourself with a fresh surrender.

Hymn: Trust in God

Seize the Moment – Day 1320

Today’s song focus will be

Trust in God

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB95)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

And do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He will make your paths straight.”

Inspired by famous hymns written by Fanny Crosby and Phoebe Knapp, Chris Brown, Steven Furtick, Brandon Lake & Mitch Long wanted to create a new worship song that was both a declaration and a proclamation of God’s faithfulness to His children. In a time where trusting God is becoming more rare and more challenging, this song helps us all declare with one voice that even though we may be shaken, we will still trust in God.

I trust in God, my Savior,

The One who will never fail

He will never fail

We need to wake up with the words of this song in our hearts and on our lips. He is always there when we need Him. When we seek Him, we will always find Him ready to help us. So let’s declare our trust in God!

Trust in God

[Verse 1]
Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine
He’s been my fourth man in the fire time after time
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
And what He did for me on Calvary is more than enough

[Chorus]
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail

[Verse 2]
Perfect submission, all is at rest
I know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps
So this is my story and this is my song
Praising my risen King and Savior all the day long

[Chorus]
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail

[Bridge]
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust Him
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust Him
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust Him
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him

[Chorus]
That’s why I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail
Oh, I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail
I sought the Lord

[Bridge]
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord (And He delivered me from all my fears)
I sought the Lord (From everything)
And He heard and He answered, oh
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust Him
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust in God

Hymn: O Praise the Name

Seize the Moment – Day 1313

Today’s hymn focus will be

O Praise the Name

Psalm 9:1-2 (NASB95)

“I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart;

I will tell of all Your wonders

 I will be glad and exult in You;

I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.”

Recorded during a night of worship at Valley Baptist in August of 2015, Marty Sampson, Dean Ussher and Ben Hastings originally created this song for a friend’s Easter worship service. While verbally painting a picture of the cross, Jesus’ death and resurrection, each verse challenges the singer to stop and think about what they are singing. When we truly think about what Jesus did for us, one cannot help but to sing with endless praise.

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

We need to wake up to the fact that Paul writes about in Romans 5:8 “But God  demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” We need to express our praise to God for this amazing gift and be ready to share this fact with those in need of a Savior!

I cast my mind to CalvaryWhere Jesus bled and died for meI see His wounds, His hands, His feetMy Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tearsThey laid Him down in Joseph’s tombThe entrance sealed by heavy stoneMessiah still and all alone

O praise the Name of the Lord our GodO praise His Name forevermoreFor endless days we will sing Your praiseOh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawnThe Son of heaven rose againO trampled death where is your sting?The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the Name of the Lord our GodO praise His Name forevermoreFor endless days we will sing Your praiseOh Lord, oh Lord our God

He shall return in robes of whiteThe blazing sun shall pierce the nightAnd I will rise among the saintsMy gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face

Hymn: King of Kings

Seize the Moment – Day 1306

Today’s hymn focus will be

King of Kings

Psalm 13:6 (NLT)

 “I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.

Written in the summer of 2019 by Hillsong Worship artists Jason Ingram and Brooke and Scott Ligertwood, this praise anthem was created to help worshipers lean into the truths of the words and be stirred to worship. With the song firmly rooted in scripture and packed full of theology, their hopes were that this song would articulate the heart of the Gospel and the message of the church. Christ is the rescuer of sinners and gives us hope of new life in Him.

 Praise the Father, Praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, three in One

 God of Glory, Majesty, Praise forever to the King of Kings.

We need to wake up and realize that there is nothing that we can do to earn salvation. It is only through Christ’s rescue and redemption through his glorious resurrection that we can be saved. That is what gives us hope and is the message that we need to share with others today.

Hymn: Redeemed

Seize the Moment – Day 1299

Today’s song focus will be

Redeemed

1 Peter 1:18-19 (NASB95)

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”

Fanny Crosby is well known for her hymn writing abilities, with over 9000 to her credit. This particular hymn was written in 1882 while attending a revival meeting led by her friend, Theodore Camp. She responded to the altar call, being prayed over by the elders. Previously, she had left the altar “without getting happy”, but this time was different. As the congregation sang the fifth verse from “Alas and Did My Savior Bleed”, she felt like her soul was flooded with heavenly light. She leaped to her feet, shouting “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”, as she realized that she had finally surrendered everything to God.

Redeemed, Redeemed! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

Redeemed, Redeemed! His child and forever I am.

We need to wake up and realize like Fanny Crosby, who had been a Christian for long time, that to find true happiness in our Christian lives, we have to totally let go of the things of this world, and hold on to the hands of the One who redeemed us…Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior!

Redeemed

1
Redeemed—how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am. Redeemed, redeemed,

Chorus:

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
  His child, and forever, I am.

2

Redeemed and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.

3

I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long;
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.

4
I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose way I delight;
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.

Hymn: Hear our Praises

Seize the Moment – Day 1292

Today’s song focus will be

Hear our Praises

Psalm 96:1-2 (NASB95)

Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.

Rueben Morgan wrote this song in 1999 and was featured on Hillsong’s album Shout to the Lord 2000 as a declaration song of worship. And while it is an inspirational song to proclaim God’s praises everywhere, it also serves as a prayer of the Great Commission. With our homes and communities filled with Christ’s love, and the areas of suffering and injustice bowing to Jesus, then the whole world will declare in unity the glory of God.

From the mountains to the valleys,
Hear our praises rise to you,
From the heavens to the nations,
Hear our singing fill the air.

We need to wake up to the fact that according to I Corinthians 1, we are all called to agree together, perfectly united in mind with the message of Christ and not to be divided. This can only be accomplished when we seek Him first in everything we say and do.

Hymn: What a Beautiful Name

Seize the Moment – Day 1285

Today’s song focus will be

What a Beautiful Name

Colossians 1:15 (NASB95)

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Brooke Fraser Ligertwood had been writing songs before she was even a teenager. She came to the Lord at the age of 15 in her home country of New Zealand. She later moved to Sydney, Australia where she joined Hillsong Worship, helping to write songs like ‘Desert Song’, ‘Hosanna’, and ‘None but Jesus’. In 2015, she co-wrote “What a Beautiful Name” with Ben Fielding, which went on to receive a Grammy award. She said they wanted to create a song that brought a balance of sound theology and personal lyrics of what that means for the individual worshipper.

What a beautiful Name it is.

What a beautiful Name it is

The Name of Jesus Christ my King.

What a beautiful Name it is

Nothing compares to this.

What a beautiful Name it is

The Name of Jesus

We need to wake up each morning declaring our worship to the One who gave everything for us so that we could have the abundant life that can only be found in Him.

So Jesus You brought heaven down
My sin was great Your love was greater
What could separate us now

Chorus 2
What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Death could not hold You
The veil tore before You
You silence the boast of sin and grave

For You are raised to life again

You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

Hymn: As The Deer

Seize the Moment – Day 1278

Today’s song focus will be

As The Deer

 Psalm 42:1 (NASB95)

“As the deer pants for the water brooks,

So my soul pants for You, O God.

Written in 1981 while attending a summer session at Christ for the Nations

Institute in Dallas, TX, Marty Nystrom was on a quest to recover his joy. He had

been active in ministry while also teaching, but something was missing. His

roommate suggested that he go on a fast to help him recover his joy. So Marty

took the challenge and on the nineteenth day of his fast, he found himself sitting

at a piano, playing some chord progressions when he looked over and saw a

Bible on a music stand that was opened to Psalm 42. After reading through the

passage, he began to sing its message. The song was finished in a matter of

minutes:

 As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee

You alone are my hearts desire and I long to worship Thee.

We need to wake up and renew our hunger and thirst for more of God. It is not

something that anyone else can do for you. Just like you can lead a horse to water,

but you can’t make it drink, the same is true for us in our personal walk with Christ.

Hymn: Rock of Ages

Seize the Moment – Day 1271

Today’s song focus will be

Rock of Ages

Psalm 62:1-2 (NASB95)

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.

Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”

In 1740, Augustus Toplady was the pastor in Somerset England, traveling along a road near Burrington Combe when an intense storm broke out. The rugged  cliffs on one side and a deep gorge on the other, forced him to dash into a cave

for shelter. The words for the hymn began to form in his mind as he thought of the shelter being found in the rock of faith and it giving protection from the  storms of life.

 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee

We need to wake up and acknowledge the words of this hymn! It is a solid testimony of the powerful sacrifice of Christ who is not only our Savior, but He is our source of protection and encouragement.

Rock of Ages

1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

2 Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law’s demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

Hymn: When We See Christ

Seize the Moment – Day 1264

Today’s song focus will be

When We See Christ

Philippians 3:8 (NASB95)

“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of

knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,  for whom I have suffered the loss of all things,

and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,”

Esther Kerr Rusthol was a very accomplished woman. She was the sister of musical evangelist Phil Kerr, married to pastor and evangelist Howard Rusthol, was an author, poet, composer, singer and evangelist and associate pastor at

Pentecostal Angeles Temple of Los Angeles. But her life was not without struggles as she suffered from ill health, passing away at the age of 53. But this 1941 hymn is probably her best-known song, echoing the words of Paul with the value of knowing Christ.

 It will be worth it all when we see Jesus!

Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ.

One glimpse of his dear face, all sorrow will erase.

So, bravely run the race till we see Christ.

We need to wake up and take the words of this song to encourage our hearts in both the good and the bad times of our lives. We make the choice to change our perspective and focus on what is worth it all!

When We See Christ

Oft times the day seems long, our trials hard to bear,
We’re tempted to complain, to murmur and despair;
But Christ will soon appear to catch His Bride away,
All tears forever over in God’s eternal day.

Refrain:
It will be worth it all when we see Jesus,
Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ;
One glimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase,
So bravely run the race till we see Christ.

Sometimes the sky looks dark with not a ray of light,
We’re tossed and driven on, no human help in sight;
But there is one in heav’n who knows our deepest care,
Let Jesus solve your problem – just go to Him in pray’r.

Life’s day will soon be o’er, all storms forever past,
We’ll cross the great divide, to glory, safe at last;
We’ll share the joys of heav’n – a harp, a home, a crown,
The tempter will be banished, we’ll lay our burden down.

Be A Blessing

Be A Blessing

Romans 12:4-16; 1 Peter 3:8-11

A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Jerry spoke about Gideon and his need for a sign from God. I have to admit, my mind immediately chased a rabbit and went to “What if God used church signs to speak to us?” Let’s look at a few…

“Try these four-letter words: LOVE    PRAY   HOPE”

“If you don’t study the Bible, you won’t get the answer!”

“This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it’s gonna pass.”

“Our church is like fudge – sweet with a few nuts.”

“Forgive your enemies – it messes with their heads.”

“Kind words can be short and sweet, but their echoes are truly endless.”

All too often, we forget that our words carry a lot more weight than we give them credit. When we think of being a blessing, we tend to only think about tangible ways like giving someone money or meeting a need. But what about the blessing that all of us can give with our words? Not something just to pacify them, but to truly speak life over them and into their lives.

We are to be the Body of Christ, which means we have to all work together. That is why we all have been given different gifts. This makes it possible for us to be that Body.

ILLUS: Fold thumb over on both hands. Pick up Bible and turn to Romans 12

Thumbs have been given a bad rap. Have you ever heard “I’m all thumbs”? In the movie “Spy Kids” the Thumbkins were the bumbling henchman. We NEED our thumbs! They are the ones that help us to get a grip on things.  “Okay, Ken, but I don’t feel like I am an important part of the body….I feel like I am the appendix.” Well, at first people thought it was a part that was no longer useful to the body, but now they are finding that it provides “good” bacteria for the intestines to help with digestion and our immune system. * So, while we could live without it, it serves a purpose. This is why every part of the body is important.

READ:      Romans 12:4-16

Paul wrote these words to the people of Galatia and to us to remind us that we are to use our gifts selflessly, never for selfish gains, but in order to honor God and to see His blessings poured out on the whole body!

Peter has some similar words to say as he wrote to the people of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia (which is now modern day Turkey)

READ: 1 Peter 3:8-11

What does that have to do with being a blessing? EVERYTHING!

We are all to be working together to build the kingdom of God for His glory and honor, not just for our own benefit. The late Rev. Dr. Jack Hyles, pastor of First Baptist Church in Hammond, IN once stated: “The greatest blessing in the whole world is being a blessing.” He was known for building one of the nations largest bus ministries that then led to opening schools and training resources to help minister to the needs of the church and community. God used his giftings and those of the people in the church to make a difference for both current and eternal needs.

So today we are going to give you scriptural answers to the following questions:

  • Who is to be a blessing?
  • When are we to be a blessing?
  • How are we to be a blessing?
  • Why are we to be a blessing?

Let us pray….

I. Who is to be a blessing?

1 Peter 3:8:

“Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.”

All of you:
  1. Be of one mind (the body)
  2. Sympathize with each other
  3. Love each other as family
  4. Be tenderhearted with each other
  5. Keep a humble attitude toward each other.

Many of these follow the Five Love Languages, and as a Christian, the world will know that we are His disciples by our love for one another.

They will know that we care when we show that we care.

II. When are we to be a blessing?

Romans 12:12-13:

“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

  1. Rejoice always
  2. Be patient
  3. Keep praying
  4. Be ready to help
  5. Eager to practice hospitality

I Thessalonians 5:11:

“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

  1. Encourage each other
  2. Build each other up

ILLUS: George Mraz and weightlifting training.

III. How are we to be a blessing?

Romans 12:6-8

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.  If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”

  1. God has given each of us different gifts:
  2. Prophesy, speak the words God has given you.
  3. Serving, then serve others well
  4. Encouragement, then be encouraging
  5. Giving, then give generously
QUOTE:
“When God blesses you financially, don’t raise your standard of living. Raise your standard of giving.” (Matt Batterson)

  1. Leadership, then take it seriously
  2. Showing kindness, then do it gladly

Romans 12:9-10:

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection and take delight in honoring each other.”

  1. Can’t fake it till you make it!
  2. Not just for married couples.
  3. Really love and be genuine.
  4. Keep in mind what is good.
  5. Enjoy recognizing that love by honoring each other.

IV. Why are we to be a blessing?

  1. 1 Peter 3:9:

“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.”

 Gotta be honest, my default can easily go to sarcasm, which, despite what my M&M mug says, is NOT a love language.

  1. Don’t do what sinful nature leads you to do, but rather allow the Spirit to lead you to pay back with a blessing.
  2. Do what God has called you to do…and you will be blessed.

Colossians 3:23:

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”

  1. Think about it this way…God did not add another day to your life because you needed it. He did it because someone out there needs you!
  2. When we serve others in love, we are showing our love for God in what we do and say.

Conclusion:

        Today, I have given you the scriptural evidence that proves 1) Who is to be a blessing; 2) When we are to be a blessing; 3) How we are to be a blessing; and 4) Why we are to be a blessing. Imagine what our world would be like if we, as Christians, put this into practice as a “norm” for our lives. Peter quoted the Psalmist David in 1 Peter 3:10-11 (repeats Psalm 34:12-14) to give encouragement as to why we should live this way.

For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life
and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil
and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good.
Search for peace, and work to maintain it.”

So take this as your next challenge to help change the atmosphere of this world in which we live. Live on purpose to be a blessing.

Closing Blessing Prayer:  EPHESIANS 1:16b-19a

“I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.  I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him.”

Hymn: Raise a Hallelujah

Seize the Moment – Day 1257

Today’s song focus will be

Raise a Hallelujah

James 1:2-4 (NASB95)

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing

that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its

perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

While facing both their two year old son, Jaxon, and their four year old daughter, Addie, battling an E coli infection, Bethel Music’s CEO Joel and Janie Taylor were at a point where they were totally drained, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

But they said they could feel the prayers from around the world for their family.  Their friends, Jonathan David and Melissa Helser, were interceding in prayer when God gave them this song. They shared it with the Taylor family and they made it

Their anthem, seeing both their children improve and receive their healing.

 I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm Louder and louder,

you’re gonna hear my praises roar, Up from the ashes, hope will arise

Death is defeated, the King is alive!

We need to wake up and realize that worship is a powerful weapon against the forces of the enemy. We need to raise up our voices in praise over doubt, fear and unbelief and see God bring the victory.

Hymn: How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

Seize the Moment – Day 1250

Today’s song focus will be

How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

John 3:16-17 (NASB95)

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that

whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.  For God did

not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might

be saved through Him.”

Today’s song was written by Christian Worship Leader Stuart Townsend in an effort bring our focus on our Lord more than ourselves. He desired to help believers to put Christ as the center of our worship, no matter the situation. Many times, our emotions try to be the center when, if we put Christ as the center, we will never be disappointed.

          How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure,

         That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.

We need to wake up and focus our worship on the One Who did so much for us. Our worship should never be self-seeking or self-serving, making it all about how we feel or what we need. Our worship should be focused on the One who deserves our highest praise…our wonderful, omnipotent God. Then our emotions will be a by-product of that focus.

How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.
